Brig remain in second position in the Northern Premier League Premier Division after a 0-0 draw with FC United.

The result - which was the first of such a scoreline for Brig since October 2020 - saw plenty of chances throughout, with Jamie Milligan's side having the best of them.

After a couple of early openings for both sides, it was eventual player of the match Macauley Wilson that produced a headed goalline clearance to deny the visitors on 14 minutes. Then, Nathan Pond, who began the game as a striker, headed an Aaron Skinner cross over the bar under heavy pressure at the end.

Brig continued to probe the FC United goal, and Fin Sinclair-Smith came closest to opening the scoring on 33 minutes. His curling shot looked destined to beat goalkeeper Dan Laverscombe and nestle into the bottom corner, but the defender produced a last-ditch block to deny him.

Brig almost took the lead within three minutes of the second half getting underway. Dan Martin found space and unleashed a driven shot towards the corner from a tight angle, with Laverscombe getting a fingertip on the ball to divert it wide.

Then, on 52 minutes, substitute Paul Dawson played an exquisite ball over the top of the FC United defence. Pond ran onto it and got there before the onrushing goalkeeper, but could only lift his effort over the bar.

Martin then almost netted what would have been a goal of the season contender, catching a 30-yard half volley sweetly but seeing it fizz narrowly over the bar. At the other end, Mateusz Hewelt then got in the way of Regan Linney's first time shot from 12 yards.

As the game neared its conclusion, both sides had further opportunities to break the deadlock. A long distance effort from Mark Yeates was deflected and looped over the bar, before Pond blocked Alistair Waddecar's effort at the other end.

Rhys Turner then almost made an immediate impact on his first Brig appearance, twisting beyond an FC United defender before firing narrowly wide of the post.

A half-chance fell to visiting full-back Andy Halls late on, who hit an effort narrowly over the bar from 35 yards. That was to be the final opportunity of the game, with the 0-0 draw maintaining Brig's position in second place in the league behind Matlock Town, who are the next opponents for Jamie Milligan and his side.
