A stunning goal from Mark Yeates meant Brig recorded a 1-1 draw against Nantwich Town at the Sir Tom Finney Stadium to end their 2021/22 season.

Nantwich had the first major opportunity of the game on two minutes. From a corner, captain Joel Stair nodded a header narrowly wide of the post.

On nine minutes, Yeates and Dan Martin combined well for Brig, with the Irishman being dispossessed after he worked his way into the box.

Brig continued to create openings, and Fin Sinclair-Smith came closest when his header struck the crossbar on 25 minutes.

Jake Thompson then found himself clean through on goal after getting in the way of a defensive clearance. His low effort was well saved by Matthew Gould in the Nantwich goal.

Both teams went into the break with the deadlock yet to be broken, but it was to be the visitors who found the key early in the second half. On 49 minutes, captain Stair rose highest and powered his header into the back of the net.

Jamie Milligan’s side, however, continued to put pressure on, and almost drew level when Yeates’s corner had to be tipped away by the goalkeeper. From the following set piece, Martin drew a fine save out of Gould, before Paul Dawson’s effort from distance cleared the bar.

On 75 minutes, Nathan Pond got on the end of a Brig free-kick, with his effort clipping the post and rebounding away.

Substitute Jake Daniels then fired an effort wide, before a cross from fellow substitute Joe Strawn deflected off a defender and hit the post.

With just seconds left on the clock in normal time, however, Brig got their equaliser – and it was a moment to savour to end the season. Directly from a corner, Yeates found the top corner with an inswinger which left Gould with no chance.

Brig could not find a winner, although Aspinall was called into action late on to deny Akiel Raffie from close range. Milligan’s side recorded a 1-1 draw to cap off what has been a fine season, with a number of memorable performances both home and away and a play-off push that went into the final day.

Brig knew they could get into the play-offs before the day began, but they needed results involving Scarborough Athletic or Matlock Town to go their way. Both of those sides managed to record victories, meaning any result Brig could achieve would serve as cement for an impressive sixth-placed finish. They enter next season on the back of a seven-match unbeaten run – the perfect base to start a new campaign.
